At Tall Turf, one of our most significant leadership development opportunities is our summer staff positions. Summer staff receive a large amount of our investment, because we know that they are the primary vessels of our message!
The first thing you can expect as a summer staffer is a big hearty dose of diversity. We are very intentional about who and how we hire, because we believe that one of the best ways for kids to catch the idea of reconciliation is to see it modeled by our staff. Accordingly, our summer staff is one of the most diverse in the country. Our staff come from all manner of ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds, each bringing their own unique flavor to camp.
The second thing our staff experience is staff orientation. Our orientation is longer than most other camps, but that's mostly because we deal with different things than most camps do. Our staff not only receive training on child-management strategies and their daily tasks, but they also delve deep into our curriculum on reconciliation. Staff learn about how structural factors affect kids, and also about how they themselves have been affected. This is usualluy a time of great vulnerability for summer staff, but also one of great healing and is a model of our hope for reconciliaiton.
